AbandoNADA Adriatica: A Cinematic Exploration of Cultural Heritage

Abandoned places often hold within their crumbling walls untold stories, forgotten histories, and echoes of lives once intertwined with their spaces. The project “Feminine Frames: Poetic Justice for the Adriatic’s Abandoned Places” sheds light on the cultural and historical significance of such sites in Albania and Montenegro, transforming them into vessels of artistic expression. Supported by the Western Balkan Fund, the initiative culminated in the creation of AbandoNADA Adriatica, a short experimental poetry film that offers a poignant reflection on the region’s neglected landmarks. Through this project, these forgotten spaces found new voices, resonating with themes of memory, loss, and revival.

We spoke with the poet Nata Simebaji, the creator of this project.

Can you tell us about the “Feminine Frames” project and its main objectives?

The “Feminine Frames: Poetic Justice for the Adriatic’s Abandoned Places” project aims to explore and celebrate the cultural significance of abandoned sites in the Adriatic region. Supported by the Western Balkan Fund, the main objectives are to raise awareness about these neglected spaces, highlight their aesthetic value, and encourage collective action towards their preservation. It is believed that these locations hold rich histories and stories that deserve to be shared and appreciated.

What inspired you to focus on abandoned places in the Adriatic?

Abandoned places possess a unique beauty and a profound sense of history that often goes unnoticed. The Adriatic region is filled with such sites, each with its own narrative shaped by time and neglect. The inspiration came from a desire to not only document these locations but also evoke emotions through artistic expression. There is a strong intention to create a dialogue around their potential for rebirth and reinterpretation, emphasizing their importance in our shared cultural heritage.

How does the short experimental poetry film “AbandoNADA Adriatica” fit into this project?

“AbandoNADA Adriatica” is the main output of this project. This short experimental poetry film combines visual storytelling with poetic narration to capture the essence of abandoned places in the Adriatic. The film aims to convey the haunting beauty of these sites while inviting viewers to reflect on their significance. The interplay of poetry and imagery allows for an exploration of themes like loss, memory, and resilience in a way that resonates emotionally with audiences.

What role does poetry play in your exploration of these abandoned spaces?

Poetry serves as a powerful medium for expressing complex emotions and ideas. In this project, it articulates the stories behind abandoned places in a nuanced way. By using poetic language, it evokes feelings of nostalgia and contemplation, encouraging viewers to connect with these sites on a deeper level. Poetry helps frame these locations not just as remnants of the past but as spaces full of potential for future narratives.

What challenges did you face during this project?

One primary challenge was gaining access to some of these abandoned sites, as many are on private property or difficult to reach. Additionally, there were safety concerns associated with exploring dilapidated structures. Another challenge involved ensuring that the artistic vision resonated with audiences while remaining respectful of the histories and communities connected to these spaces.

How do you envision this project impacting local communities?

There is hope that “Feminine Frames” will spark conversations about the importance of preserving cultural heritage within local communities. By showcasing the beauty and stories of abandoned places through the film, it aims to inspire community members to take an interest in these sites. The project also encourages collaboration among artists, historians, and activists to advocate for preservation efforts and explore innovative ways to revitalize these spaces.

What message do you want viewers to take away from “AbandoNADA Adriatica”?

The primary message is one of appreciation for the beauty found in decay and neglect. Viewers are encouraged to recognize that abandoned places are not just relics of the past; they are integral parts of our cultural identity that deserve attention and care. By engaging with these spaces through art and storytelling, there is hope to foster a sense of responsibility towards their preservation and inspire others to see value in what is often overlooked.
